The definitios of grazing pressure, herbage allowance and stocking rate, and the relationships between them, are discussed. Under temperate conditions, herbage intake appears to approach the maximum only at levels of daily herbage allowance (measured to ground level) equivalent to four times the amount eaten, and declines rapidly when the allowance falls below 40 g OM/kg LW/day. The relationship between herbage intake and allowance appears to result from the increasing difficulty of pre-hending herbage as the sward is grazed close to ground level. The relationship between stocking rate and animal performance is discussed, and comparisons made between theorethical and actual experimental results. It is concluded that, in growing animals, the shape of the relationship is influenced by (a) the duration of the period of measurement and (b) the growth still to be the animals at the start of the period. The relationship can be taken to be linear over a wide range os stocking rates for growing animals, when measured over a full grazing season, but it may be curvilinear for lactating animals, including cow/calf and ewe/lamb units. The practical implications of these conclusions are discussed briefly. |
